Orbitline Machining

A fictional machine shop in Titusville that cuts aluminum, titanium and stainless parts for aerospace customers. Its buyers are engineers and purchasing agents who want a drawing in, a quote back, and no brochure.

Sample concept, not client work. The business shown is fictional.

What was designed

A five-page website, plus a small mark so the site has something to hang on.

The pages

  1. Home. One line on what the shop makes, a drawing of a finished part, and a big “Send a drawing” button.
  2. Capabilities. Machines and processes as a plain list, with materials beside them.
  3. Materials & inspection. How parts are checked before they ship, in the shop’s own words. (The sample makes no certification claims, because the business is made up.)
  4. Request a quote. A form built for engineers: part name, material, quantity, drawing link, need-by date.
  5. Contact. Address, phone, and a map link.

The mark

A tilted ellipse, an orbit, with one orange dot sitting on it, like a part at the end of a toolpath. A single straight line leaves the ellipse and runs out to the right, where it becomes the underline of the name. ORBITLINE in condensed capitals, MACHINING small and spaced out under it.

Palette

  • Black oxide#15181BGround for the home hero and the footer.
  • Bead-blast#C8CDD2Panels and lines, the color of a freshly finished aluminum part.
  • Titanium#5B6670Secondary text and the ellipse.
  • Safety orange#FF6A13The dot and the one button per page.
  • White#F7F8F9Text on dark, page ground elsewhere.

Type

IBM Plex Sans Condensed for headings and navigation. IBM Plex Mono for part numbers, material callouts and the quote form, because engineers read mono as “this is data”. Both open-license.

In the package

The website behind this sample.

What’s in it

  • Five pages designed on a template system and built on Squarespace or WordPress, in your own account
  • Phone and desktop layouts
  • Your platform’s contact form, set up to email you
  • Handoff so you can edit it yourself

On a real job you supply the text and photos and we place and style them. We can suggest stock photos you buy in your own name. The platform plan and the domain are billed to you, at cost.

Three decisions

  1. The button says what the buyer does.

“Send a drawing”, not “Get in touch”. Engineers show up with a file.

  2. Mono only where it’s data.

If Plex Mono shows up in a headline, it’s decoration. It stays in part numbers and form labels.

  3. Orange once.

One orange button per page. Everything else is gray and black so the button doesn’t need to shout.
